Atmel launches New 8-bit Atmel tinyAVR Microcontrollers

Atmel is expanding the Atmel® tinyAVR® family with the ATtiny102 and ATtiny104 8-pin/14-pin 1kB microcontrollers (MCUs). These new devices come packed with features not previously seen in the lowest-end MCUs from Atmel.

Exciting New Features

The two new MCUs use the same CPU architecture as the very successful tinyAVR ATtiny4/5/9/10 devices—which yield up to 12 MIPS at 12MHz clock—while adding several new features that bring them closer to higher performing products. These include:

  • Self-Programmable Flash Memory from 1.8V to 5.5V (in-system)
  • Short Startup-time Option(8ms versus 64ms for the normal startup time.)
  • Unique Serial Number (10-byte unique serial number)
  • USART (There is no I2C/TWI, SPI or IrDA support, but a software solution for TWI/I2C master is available.)
  • Accurate Internal 8MHz Oscillator (production calibrated to an accuracy of +/-3% for voltages between 2.7V and 4.0V, and temperatures between 0°C and 85°C)
  • 10-bit Successive Approximation ADC (support speeds up to 15ksps)
  • Multiple calibrated internal voltage references (Adding to the standard 1.1V reference level, the new 2.2V and 4.3V reference levels offer possibilities for direct and accurate measurements of alkaline batteries and Li-Ion batteries without the need for any external voltage dividers or scalers.)
  • Analog Comparator Output

Tools Support

 Attiny104B

The new devices are fully supported by Atmel Studio 7, and the GCC and IAR compilers. In addition they are supported by the STK600 with dedicated socket card ATSTK600-SC11 and routing card ATSTK600-RC-102 (for the ATtiny104). The new products are supported by a new evaluation kit called Xplained Nano (TINY104-XNANO), featuring embedded programmer, full access to all GPIO, one mechanical button and one LED and one ATtiny104-SSN.  It features the possibility to program external targets via Tiny Programming Interface (ATtiny4/5/9/10).
