Espressif – ESP32-S31 Wireless-SoC with Ethernet

Espressif – ESP32-S31 Wireless-SoC mit Ethernet

Espressif – ESP32-S31 Wireless SoC with Ethernet: Espressif, known for its wireless SoCs, recently unveiled the ESP32-S31 as a high-performance multi-protocol connectivity solution.

This new SoC provides the foundation for integrating wireless interfaces – such as Bluetooth 5.4 LE & Classic, Wi-Fi 6 (2.4 GHz), and ZigBee – along with a 1 Gbps Ethernet interface into HMI applications. As a new generation successor to the “classic” ESP32, which was the last to support a wired Ethernet interface, this new SoC builds on its predecessor’s capabilities.

Espressif – A quick glance at the ESP32-S31 wireless SoC with ethernet

With a dual-core RISC-V main core (up to 320 MHz) and 512 kB of integrated SRAM, as well as a 250 MHz 8-bit DDR PSRAM interface for RAM expansion and 60 GPIOs, the ESP32-S31 is suitable for

  • HMI Solutions
  • AI powered applications
  • Audio applications

HMI Solutions

The DVP camera interface (8 to 16-bit) and the flexible LCD/TFT controller (8 to 24-bit parallel RGB, I8080, MOTO6800) allow for the connection of both – cameras and high-resolution displays. Color space conversions between RGB565, YUV420, and YUV411 are also supported. Encoders for JPEG, PPA, and 2D-DMA are available for efficient image processing and the development of user interfaces.

Thanks to the integrated capacitive touch peripherals with up to 14 channels, modern user interface concepts can be implemented directly.

AI Applications

Artificial intelligence is already being used in innovative HMIs—for example, in speech recognition. Espressif has already addressed this area by providing software support for its current SoC families. The company plans to support the ESP-IDF, as well as extensions such as ESP-Matter and ESP Private Agents (for using popular LLMs).

Audio

The ESP32-S31 will support Bluetooth 5.4 LE audio features, enabling low-power streaming using an LC3 codec as well as multi-stream audio. In addition, the two I2S controllers are synchronized with the Bluetooth audio at the hardware level, resulting in minimal latency and reduced software complexity.

Summary

With the ESP32-S31, Espressif is expanding its portfolio with a SoC that supports both Ethernet and standard wireless interfaces. This is complemented by features for HMI and audio applications.
