Nuvoton – KLC330FL01WW – High‑Power UV‑Laserdiode

Nuvoton - KLC330FL01WW – High‑Power UV‑Laserdiode

Nuvoton – KLC330FL01WW – High-Power UV Laser Diode: Nuvoton has over 40 years of experience in the development and manufacturing of laser diodes and has shipped more than three billion laser light sources for optical storage media

Building on this history, the company has evolved from a supplier of traditional infrared diodes for CD/DVD/Blu-ray to a provider of high-performance GaN and GaAs laser diodes, which today serve demanding industrial applications in the UV, visible, and IR spectrums.

Overview of Nuvoton’s Laser Portfolio

The current portfolio covers wavelengths ranging from 378 nm to 830 nm and includes UV, violet, blue, red, and infrared laser diodes for industrial exposure, 3D printing, material processing, and inspection. Key areas of focus include high-power GaN laser diodes in the UV/violet range, as well as variants designed for compact optical modules.

This allows the portfolio to be flexibly adapted to system requirements in terms of power density, form factor, and thermal design.

KLC330FL01WW – high‑power UV laser diode

The KLC330FL01WW is a high-performance ultraviolet laser diode based on GaN technology, delivering 1 W of optical power at 379 nm, and is designed for industrial applications requiring high power density and a compact footprint. It is housed in a robust 9-mm-diameter TO-9 CAN package, which offers good mechanical stability and heat dissipation, thereby supporting a long service life in continuous operation.

Optical, electrical, and thermal key data

  • Typ. wavelength: 379 nm (spectrum 375–380 nm)
  • Optical output power (CW): 1,0 W
  • Electrical Parameter:
    • Threshold current Ith = 0.75A typ.
    • Nominal current 1.35A @ 4.9V typ.
  • Transverse mode: Multi mode, designed for high power density
  • Package: TO‑9‑CAN, Ø 9 mm, optimized for easy installation on cooling surfaces
  • Temperature ranges:
    • Case temp. in operation: 20°C bis 30°C
    • storage temperature: -40°C bis +85°C
  • Beam divergence(1/e², typical):
    • Horizontal: 20° / Vertical: 38°
  • Active emitter area: 25 µm × 1 µm

The specified case temperature range of 20 to 30 °C reinforces the importance of a well-designed thermal concept that ensures efficient heat dissipation through the case bottom to a heat sink or heat spreader; this reduces wavelength drift and power degradation during long-term operation, making the KLC330FL01WW particularly attractive for systems with a high duty cycle.

Mercury Replacement & Typical Applications

The KLC330FL01WW is designed for applications that require compact, efficient UV sources with high power density and precise focusing capabilities.

Nuvoton Laser Diodes

The emission wavelength of 379 nm is very close to the mercury i-line at 365 nm, making the KLC330FL01WW particularly attractive for systems that were previously designed for Hg i-line lamps. In many existing exposure and inspection optics, the spectral design is already optimized for the i-line, making the KLC330FL01WW a spectrally well-matched, more compact, and more energy-efficient solid-state alternative.

In addition, designs using the KLC330FL01WW simplify handling by eliminating the use of mercury and meet today’s environmental and disposal requirements

Other typical applications include:

  • Laser Direct Imaging (LDI) for Printed Circuit Board and Mask Manufacturing
  • 3D Printing with UV-Curable Photopolymers
  • Resin and Coating Curing in Industrial Manufacturing Processes
  • Measurement and Analysis Applications in the Near-UV Spectrum
