Novosense – NSD8381 Stepper Motor Driver

NSD8381 Stepper Motor Treiber

Novosense – NSD8381 Stepper Motor Driver: Novosense Microelectronics (NOVOSENSE, SSE: 688052) offers extremely robust and reliable analog and mixed-signal ICs: Isolators, Sensors & Drivers for industrial as well as automotive applications!

The NSD8381 is a flexible bipolar stepper motor driver for applications in automotive and industrial sectors.

NSD8381 – Stepper motor driver at a glance

The NSD8381 accepts operating voltages from 4.5V to 36V and is therefore not limited to automotive applications.

The IC’s drivers can be used either as two H-bridges or as four independent half-bridges. This means that their use is not restricted to stepper motors but can also be used to directly control two DC brush motors, for example.

The drivers supply a maximum current of 1.35A. There are two QFN package options with 32 or 40 pins. An Enable pin allows the IC to be switched into sleep mode where less than 10µA is consumed.

Stepper motor operation of the NSD8381

The stepper motor operation of the NSD8381 offers full-step, half-step & mini-step operation (16 steps) as well as micro-step operation down to 1/32 (128 steps).

Datasheet NSD8381

The IC has an integrated current control loop implemented with internal current monitoring, comparator, DAC and PWM clock & control logic.

The two main operating modes are the RUN and HOLD modes. HOLD offers two options regarding the holding current.

Protection & dignosis functions

The NSD8381 has an overcurrent protection (OCP) against short circuit of the high-side to ground or low-side to the battery. The IC also monitors the temperature to provide warnings before a forced shutdown occurs due to over temperature. The temperature can also be applied as a voltage to an analog output pin so that it can be continuously monitored by a host microcontroller.

In stepper motor mode, it is possible to detect motor blockages via the BEMF.
