Holtek – HT32F61052 BMS MCU with USB-PD PHY

Holtek – HT32F61052 BMS MCU mit USB-PD PHY

Holtek – HT32F61052 BMS MCU with USB PD 3.2 PHY: Holtek is known for application-specific microcontrollers. USB PD is becoming increasingly widespread, and not just in consumer electronics. With USB PD 3.2, power transfer of up to 240 W is now possible.

In the HT32F61052, Holtek combines the communication and status detection required for USB PD solutions with the monitoring of 3 to 6 Li-ion battery cells.

This cell count is used in power tools, emergency starter solutions, mobile pumps, and many other applications that require voltages of up to around 18 V.

Holtek – HT32F61052 BMS MCU with USB PD briefly introduced

The HT32F61052 is based on an ARM Cortex-M0+ core running at up to 60 MHz. It integrates 128 kB of flash memory and 16 kB of SRAM. In addition to the processor, a battery monitor and the USB PD PHY are integrated as SiP in the 64-pin LQFP (7 mm x 7 mm). The operating temperature range of the HT32F61052 is -40 °C to +105 °C.

In addition to the usual MCU peripherals such as timers (including motor control timers), serial interfaces, a 12-bit resolution ADC, and 39 GPIOs, the HT32F61052 also features an LED controller for 8-segment displays (10 x 8 segments) and an external bus interface (EBI) that can be used to connect external memory or display modules.

The integrated USB PD PHY complies with the USB PD 3.2 / PPS specification. It supports dual role port and fast role swap functions. A VCONN switch for supplying the ICs for cable identification is included, as well as two high-voltage pins for direct switching on and off with external MOSFETs.

The PHY communicates with the processor via an internal I2C connection. This allows the external power supply unit to be controlled appropriately by the MCU depending on the operating situation.

Cumulative cell voltage monitor

Holtek has integrated a cell voltage monitor into the HT32F61052, which is connected internally to the processor. The same principle of cumulative measurement is used as in other Holtek products. The total voltage across 1 to N (N = 1 to 6) cells is determined and divided by the number of cells measured.

This ensures that the output voltage measured by the processor’s ADC is within its specified range. To determine the actual individual cell voltages, these must be calculated recursively by the processor. Holtek describes the algorithm on page 9 of Application Note AN0543EN for the HT45F85xx/HT45F86xx series.

In addition, this function block offers a 5 V voltage regulator with up to 30 mA, which can be powered directly from the battery voltage and whose output can be used to supply the processor via VDD.
