Nuvoton – NuMicro M55 Series

Nuvoton – NuMicro M55 Series

Nuvoton – NuMicro M55 Series: With the M5531 and M55M1, Nuvoton is expanding its microcontroller portfolio with a new core variant and AI acceleration.

Nuvoton’s Cortex-M55 microcontrollers have been specially developed for Internet of Things (IoT) applications and for applications that use AI algorithms. They offer high-performance (@220 MHz with ARM® Helium™ vector extension), large memory size (1.5 MB SRAM & 2 MB Flash), advanced security features, and a wide range of interfaces.

Nuvoton – NuMicro M55 Series overview

The derivatives of the NuMicro M55 Series are very similar. Compared to the M5531, the M55M1 additionally offers an Arm® Ethos™-U55 Neural Processing Unit (NPU) with an AI inference performance of up to 110 GOPS.

In addition to the performance outlined above, both MCUs offer a wide range of interfaces such as

10/100 Ethernet MAC

High-Speed USB OTG mit USB-PD (1.2) + Full-Speed USB OTG

Dual CAN FD

I2C, I3C

10x UARTs

SmartCard IF

Digital MIC Input

Camera Capture IF

24 channel 12-Bit ADC @ 5 Msps

Crypto accelerator (ECC, RSA, AES, SHA, KDF, OTFC)

All in all, these are modern, powerful microcontrollers that are ideally suited for networked applications in which Sephyr, FreeRTOS, or RT-Threat are used as the operating system.

Both derivatives are available in three different TQFP packages (64-pin, 128-pin, 176-pin).

M55M1 Endpoint AI Series

The Ethos™-U55 NPU in the M55M1 is a specialized unit optimized for running AI algorithms and models.

This NPU enables complex AI algorithms for image recognition, speech recognition, or event prediction to be performed directly on the microcontroller.

With the M55M1, Nuvoton supports development environments for AI models and algorithms, such as TensorFlow Lite Micro, openmv, and the ARM® ML Embedded Evaluation Kit. More information can be found at Github on OpenNuvoton.

With an achievable 110 GOPS, the M55M1 is ideal for cost-effective implementation of modern algorithms “on the edge.”

For instance, data protection requirements for image/video processing can be implemented by eliminating the transfer of the actual image data. Process monitoring is also conceivable in order to identify patterns and trends in large amounts of continuous measurement data, in order to better plan machine maintenance or identify upcoming defects in a timely manner.
