Nuvoton – MG51FB9AE / MG51XB9AE MCUs for price-sensitive applications: Since the company was founded in 2008 (as a spin-off from Winbond Electronics), Nuvoton has focussed on the development of microcontrollers.

The MG51 NuMicro family offers a solution for very cost-sensitive applications with both MG51FB9AE / MG51XB9AE derivatives equipped with 16kB Flash and 1kB RAM

We explained here why there are still good reasons to rely on 8-bit MCUs. The overhead of 32-bit MCUs increases the program code even for applications that can be programmed in a very space-saving manner. The MG51 NuMicro family is the logical extension of the established MS51 NuMicro family.

In addition to this technical need for more memory in 32-bit MCUs, the license costs for ARM cores are often a factor that makes these designs more expensive.

This often confronts developers and product managers with difficulties in highly price-sensitive applications.

Nuvoton – MG51FB9AE / MG51XB9AE MCUs Introduction

The MG51FB9AE / MG51XB9AE microcontrollers are the entry models of the MG51 family based on the integrated memory sizes (16kB Flash / 1kB XRAM) and their packages (FB – TSSOP20 / XB – QFN20). The other derivatives of this family offer memory sizes up to 64kB Flash with 4kB XRAM and an LQFP48 housing.

The MG51 family is based on a 1T 8051 core that can be operated at up to 24MHz.

The microcontrollers are specified for use at -40°C to +105°C and voltages from 2.4V to 5.5V for the power supply.

This means that the MCUs can be used for 3.3V and 5V designs.

Neben 2 UARTs, einer SPI und einer I2C Schnittstelle bieten diese kostengünstigen Mikrocontroller einen 8-Kanal-ADC mit 12-bit Auflösung sowie 6 PWM Kanäle.

Zusätzlich zu den architekturtypischen 256 Byte SRAM, die direkt adressiert werden können, hat Nuvoton 1kB zusätzlichen RAM (oben mit XRAM bezeichnet) integriert –  so wird für aktuelle Applikationsanforderungen ausreichend RAM angeboten.

The IAP interface offers an “in-application” programming option.

4kB LDROM for boot code is also integrated separately from the FLASH memory.
