Nuvoton - NAU83G60 Smart Amp mit KCS

Nuvoton Technology is a globally active semiconductor manufacturer with roots in Winbond and a clear focus on innovative mixed-signal solutions for audio, microcontrollers, cloud security, and industrial applications.

With in-house fabs and worldwide locations, Nuvoton delivers high-performance yet cost-optimized ICs for markets such as automotive, industrial, communication, and consumer electronics.

Today’s quick introduction: The NAU83G60 with Klippel Controlled Sound technology – high audio performance with cost-effective system implementation!

Nuvoton – NAU83G60 Smart Amp at a glance

The NAU83G60 is a smart stereo audio amplifier with an integrated, low-latency advanced audio DSP, specifically designed for modern, compact loudspeaker systems. By leveraging Klippel Controlled Sound (KCS) technology, it enables unprecedented audio quality even with cost-efficient speaker designs – more details below.

The amplifier delivers up to 2×30 W into 4 Ω (or 60 W in bridge mode) and combines a highly efficient Class-D amplifier with extensive digital signal processing:

Output Power

Stereo output power up to 30 W per channel into 4 Ω, < 10% THD+N at up to 24 V supply. 60 W in PBTL mode (parallel bridge-tied load) into 2 Ω.

Protection

Comprehensive protection features: mechanical and thermal overload protection, output power and voltage limiters, and battery limiter control.

Sound Shaping

Integrated audio DSP with 2×15-band PEQ (parametric equalizer), crossover and audio mixer, up/down sampling, and a low-latency signal path – ideal for ANC.

Connectivity

Flexible audio interfaces: I²S/PCM/TDM (up to 8 channels/192 kHz) and high-speed I²C control up to 1 Mbit/s.

Typical applications: ANC systems (automotive & consumer), soundbars and TVs, notebooks/all-in-one PCs, and wireless or smart speakers and much more – think new!

Highlight: Klippel Controlled Sound (KCS)

The unique feature of the NAU83G60 is the integrated Klippel Controlled Sound (KCS) Technology – a nonlinear adaptive loudspeaker control system based on a physical model of the transducer. KCS measures voltage and current at the speaker terminals as “sensor” inputs, identifies the electro-mechanical parameters in real time, and continuously adapts the model to consider aging, production variances, and environmental conditions.

Core functions of KCS:

  • Nonlinear distortion compensation: A “mirror” filter derived from the loudspeaker physical model (digital twin concept) removes the signal which cause harmonic and intermodulation distortions from the signal before it reaches the speaker.
  • Active stabilization of the speaker coil position: DC compensation ensures the coil operates around its ideal rest position, maximizing excursion and significantly increasing bass output.
  • Precise mechanical and thermal protection: Model-based estimation of displacement and coil temperature allows safe operation right up to the loudspeaker’s physical limits.

As a result, the NAU83G60 with KCS achieves a significantly higher utilization of available loudspeaker performance while maintaining stable sound quality over its entire lifetime.

Benefits for your product development

KCS in the NAU83G60 addresses key design goals such as sound quality, robustness/reliability, consistency, dynamics, and cost optimization — offering audio developers new design freedom.

  • Sound quality & low frequencies: By using the full usable excursion range and actively stabilizing the speaker coil, KCS extends low-frequency response and effectively reduces nonlinear distortions. Even compact loudspeakers achieve deeper bass, higher sound pressure level (SPL), and excellent perceived sound quality.
  • Robustness, reliability & overload protection: The nonlinear adaptive model accurately estimates displacement and temperature, protecting the speaker from mechanical and thermal overload — without typical limiter artifacts and virtually no latency. This allows tighter safety margins and operation closer to physical limits.
  • Consistency through adaptive learning: Since KCS continuously tracks mechanical parameters such as stiffness, temperature, and aging, the sound signature remains consistent across production tolerances, enclosure variations, climatic influences, and product lifetime. This is particularly beneficial in ANC systems.
  • Dynamics & higher loudness: By controlling excursion and adaptive high-pass filtering, the entire permissible displacement is utilized, resulting in higher SPL and improved dynamics —especially in the bass region. In parallel compression effects are minimized, delivering an open and powerful sound even at high volumes.
  • Cost efficiency & “green speaker design”: KCS allows speakers to be engineered for efficiency rather than maximum linearity — using shorter coils, softer suspensions, or smaller magnets. This reduces material costs (magnet, coil) and overall weight, while the NAU83G60 with KCS compensates distortions and prevents overload, enabling cost-optimized drivers to achieve high performance.

Overall, the NAU83G60 Smart Amplifier with integrated KCS technology provides a powerful platform for developing compact, robust, and cost-effective audio systems with outstanding sound quality and consistent performance throughout their lifetime.
