Holtek – BA45F4140 Dust Detector MCU

Holtek - BA45F4140 Dust Detector MCU

Holtek – BA45F4140 Dust Detector MCU: The BA45F4140 is an 8-bit microcontroller with A/D functionality, specifically developed for dust sensor applications. This MCU can condition, digitize and process weak sensor signals before outputting the results via its interfaces.

Holtek developed the BA45F4140 to reduce the required external circuitry and minimize system costs through integrated analogue and peripheral functions.

Holtek – BA45F4140 Dust Detector MCU: Functions and Parameters

The BA45F4140 combines an HT8 core for calculations with memory, an analogue front end and communication functions in a single IC. Key features include:

  • 4K × 16 bit FLASH program memory
  • 512 × 8 bit of data memory (RAM) and 512 × 8 bit of true EEPROM
  • 8-bit RISC CPU with multiplier/divider
  • AFE with three integrated operational amplifiers
  • Internal RC oscillators: HIRC up to 12 MHz and 32 kHz LIRC
  • Four-channel, 12-bit A/D converter and temperature sensor
  • Configurable constant-current sink (5 to 360 mA) and PA4 (sink: typ. 32/65 mA at 3 V/5 V)
  • Internal configurable LDO
  • Serial interfaces as well as timer/PWM functions
  • Operating voltage from 2.2 V to 5.5 V

The HT8 core enables conversion and evaluation of measurement values to be implemented efficiently within the controller itself.

Holtek BA45F4140 Dust Detector MCU: Application Example

The MCU block diagram below and the application circuit example demonstrate that the BA45F4140 can fully handle the key functions of a dust sensor application:

Driving the light source (LED), analogue conditioning of the detector signal from a photodiode or phototransistor, digitization using the AFE and ADC, dust-concentration calculation, and communication connectivity.

This limits the external circuitry primarily to the components of the optical path and a small number of passive components.

An important peripheral is the sink current generator. This integrated current sink (ISINK) provides a configurable constant-current and can therefore be used to drive an LED with a defined current.

A stable LED current supports reproducible measurement conditions, as the optical excitation does not depend solely on component tolerances or the supply voltage.

Together with the AFE operational amplifiers (A0PI) and the 12-bit ADC, the BA45F4140 provides a compact solution for signal acquisition and processing.
