Nuvoton – NAU7802 Precision ADC

Nuvoton – NAU7802 Precision ADC: The Nuvoton NAU7802 is a precise 24-bit sigma-delta ADC with an integrated, low-noise, and programmable amplifier that enables high-performance and cost-efficient signal evaluation of sensor bridges used in load cells or strain gauges.

Nuvoton Technology is a globally operating semiconductor manufacturer with its roots Winbond, with a clear focus on innovative mixed-signal solutions for audio, microcontrollers, cloud security, and industrial applications.

With in-house fabs and global branches, Nuvoton provides powerful yet cost-optimized ICs for markets such as automotive, industrial, communication, and consumer electronics.

The NAU7802 complements this portfolio by offering high-resolution measurements with low power consumption and minimal external component requirements.

Nuvoton – NAU7802 Precision ADC at a glance

The key features of the NAU7802 can be summarized as follows:

  • 24-bit sigma-delta ADC with up to 23-bit effective resolution (ENOB).
  • Integrated low-noise programmable gain amplifier (PGA) with wide range.
  • Internal 4.9152 MHz RC oscillator and optional external clock source.
  • Integrated programmable LDO regulator for powering external bridge sensors.
  • Bandgap reference, temperature sensor, and power-on reset circuit.
  • I²C-compatible 2-wire interface with standard and streaming modes.

The device operates with a supply voltage from 2.7 V to 5.5 V, making it suitable for both battery-powered and industrial 5 V systems. Thanks to very low power consumption and standby currents below 1 µA, the NAU7802 is highly efficient in low-sampling-rate applications.

The NAU7802 is available in standard SOP, PDIP, and space-saving QFN packages. The operating temperature range is -40°C to +85°C.

Technical parameters and special features of the NAU7802

The key technical specifications of the NAU7802 can be summarized as follows:

  • ADC core: 24-bit sigma-delta converter (Σ-Δ), up to 23-bit ENOB, typical data rate 10–80 samples per second including simultaneous 50/60 Hz mains interference suppression via FIR notch filter.

Target Applications for NAU7802

Thanks to its feature set, the NAU7802 is ideal for precise force and weight measurement with strain gauges – for example, in table and platform scales, dosing systems, and test benches. Industrial and process measurement applications, such as level, flow, and pressure sensors, also benefit from it where low bandwidth is sufficient but high resolution is required.
Typical use cases include:

  • Voltage monitoring applications, such as long-term drift observation, reference qualification, or precise supply voltage control.
  • Energy metering systems where currents or voltages must be measured with high resolution and integrated over long periods – e.g., in battery-powered data loggers, smart energy devices, or IoT nodes focusing on energy monitoring and optimization.

The combination of high resolution, integrated sensor power supply, efficient power management, and I²C interface makes it easy to implement compact, energy-efficient measurement and monitoring solutions in all these scenarios.
