ams light sensors are suitable for many applications that are used in the visible light spectrum or the IR range.

Detection of room brightness (ALS - ambient light sensing), color measurement (in the RGB color space), proximity detection (by using IR) and line arrays for "scan" applications are part of the standard portfolio.

In addition to the often used LTD products (light-to-digital), analog LTV (light-to-voltage) and LTF (light- to-frequency) products are still supported for highly dynamic applications (in terms of the light intensity and change of intensity).

ams provides parts for almost every application: mobile device display management (mobile phones, tablets), inpatient sector (TVs, computer monitors, medical diagnostic devices), industrial process Analysis (e.g. turbidity measurement of airborne particles), color control in LED lighting or in the print media.

Ambient Light Sensor (ALS)

Based on a patented dual-diode implementation, the Ambient Light Sensing (ALS) devices approximate the human eye response to light under a variety of lighting conditions. The devices have a wide range of performance allowing accurate ALS measurements in lighting environments ranging from low-light to bright sunlight up to 220K lux. This family of devices is particularly useful for display management dimming or brightness control with the purpose of reducing power consumption, extending battery life, and providing the optimum viewing in diverse lighting conditions.

Ambient Light Sensor & Proximity Detection

The Ambient Light Sensor & Proximity Detection product family provides both ambient light sensing (ALS) and proximity detection in a single device. The ALS approximates human eye response to light intensity under a variety of lighting conditions and through a variety of attenuation materials. The proximity detection feature allows a large dynamic range of operation for use in short distance detection behind dark glass such as in a cell phone or for longer distance measurements for applications such as presence detection for computer display and monitors.

Color Sensor

The color sensor product family provides red, green, blue and clear (RGBC) light sensing for precise color measurement, determination, and discrimination. A SYNC input allows for greater accuracy by enabling the color sensing to be synchronized with an external event. For example, in LED solid state lighting, the SYNC input enables the color reading to be synchronized with the PWM signal and illumination of the LEDs. Color sensors are available with a built-in IR blocking filter for accurate color measurement by minimizing the effects due to unwanted IR light sources in sunlight and other light sources.

Gesture, Color & Proximity Detection

The gesture product family features advanced Gesture detection, Proximity Detection, Digital Ambient Light Sensing (ALS), Color Sensing (RGBC), and optical pattern generation/transmission for Barcode broadcast. The IR Gesture sensor modules provide a highly integrated solution offering five essential functions for maximizing the end user experience in advanced communications and consumer
electronics enabling a coherent display and touchless interface. Gesture detection utilizes four directional photodiodes to sense IR energy (sourced by the integrated LED) to convert physical motion information (i.e. velocity, direction and distance) to digital information. The Gesture engine incorporates a wide range of device gesture requirements and accurate sensing with minimized power consumption and noise through adjustable IR LED timing and enhanced gesture algorithms.

Light-to-Frequency Sensors

Light-to-Frequency (LTF) Sensors convert light intensity to a digital form for direct interface to a microcontroller. The output of the device is square wave or pulse train whose frequency is linearly proportional to the light intensity. LTF converters are designed for applications such as ambient light measurement, light absorption/reflection in products such as white goods, photographic equipment, colorimetry, chemical analyzers and display contrast controls or any system requiring a wide dynamic range, and/or high resolution digital measurement of light intensity.

Light-to-Voltage Sensors

Light-to-Voltage (LTV) Sensors combine a photodiode and transimpedance amplifier on a single monolithic IC and provide a linear analog voltage output that is proportional to light. The voltage output can be connected directly to an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for digital processing, a comparator for threshold detection, or other analog circuitry for filtering or further processing. The devices cover a wide range of speed and responsivity options across different spectral responses to span a variety of applications to measure ambient light, light absorption or reflection, and as an infrared data receiver in light controls, printers, light curtains or remote controllers.

Linear Array Sensors

Linear Array Sensors consist of a linear array of integrating photosensing pixels which measure incident light over a user-defined exposure time and generate a voltage or digital output which represents the light exposure are each pixel.  The LAS are available in a variety of lengths and pixel resolutions (DPI). The analog output may be directly interfaced to and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for digital processing or comparing black/white thresholds. Applications include contact image sensing, OCR, edge detection, and object measurement in products such as copiers, document scanners, and spectroscopy.

Proximity

Proximity Detection Sensors detect and measure reflected infrared (IR) energy to detect the presence of an object or person. The devices include an integrated LED driver and as in the TMD2671 devices, an integrated LED. The proximity detection devices offer a wide range of performance, with four programmable LED drive currents and IR pulse repetitions. The proximity detection circuitry compensates for ambient light, allowing it to operate in environments ranging from bright sunlight to dark rooms. The wide dynamic range allows operation in short-distance detection applications behind dark glass, such as cell phones. Proximity Detection Sensors can be used for a mechanical switch replacement or to sense human gesturing.
