Microchip

Microchip has a large portfolio of high-speed communication ICs for different fiber optic applications with data rates ranging from sub-Mbps up to 12.5 Gbps. For point-to-point continuous-mode applications, a wide choice of limiting amplifiers, laser drivers and VCSEL drivers is offered to cover all kind of applications such as GbE/10GbE, Sonet/SDH and Fibre Channel. For point-to-multipoint PON applications, Microchip offers the burst mode limiting amplifiers family with industry-leading performance for GEPON/GPON, 10GEPON, XGPON and NG-PON2 applications. A family of SFF-8472 MSA fiber optic module management ICs completes the chipset offering. The high-speed communications products also include a family of Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) ICs  for operations up to 2.7 Gbps.

 

Limiting Amplifiers

Microchip's limiting amplifiers detect tiny differential or single-ended data signals from the receiver and boost them to full CML or LVPECL output levels to allow for the signal to overcome the losses and degradations it may encounter in its path to the SerDes or CDR on the line card.

All the limiting amplifiers feature loss of signal and/or signal detect circuit. Microchip's portfolio covers a wide range of applications in fiber optic transceivers for data rates as low as sub-Mbps to 12.5 Gbps.

Laser / EML Diode Drivers

Microchip offers a family of edge emitting (DFP/FP) lasers and surface emitting (VCSEL) drivers that cover applications such as GbE/10GbE, Sonet/SDH and Fibre Channel for data rates ranging from sub-Mbps to 10 Gbps. The drivers are designed to work with Microchip's SFF-8472 compliant FOM modules controller, MIC3003. With the limiting amplifier, Microchip's chipset solution presents an elegant, smart, low-power, small-footprint solution for SFF/SFP/SFP+ modules.

Transceivers

Microchip offers a transceiver that includes a laser driver and limiting amplifier integrated into a small package. Combined with Microchip's SFF-8472 compliant FOM modules controller, MIC3003, it presents an elegant, smart, low-power, small-footprint solution for SFF/SFP modules with both edge emitting (DFP/FP) lasers and surface emitting (VCSEL).

Fiber Optic Module Controllers

Microchip offers a family of fiber optic module controllers which enable the implementation of sophisticated, hot-pluggable fiber optic transceivers with intelligent laser control and an internally calibrated digital diagnostic monitoring interface per SFF-8472. They essentially integrate all non-datapath functions of an SFP transceiver into a small package (3 x 3 mm or 4 x 4 mm). These controllers also work well as a microcontroller peripheral in transponders or 10 Gbps transceivers.

A highly configurable Automatic Power Control (APC) circuit controls laser bias. Bias and modulation are temperature compensated using dual DACs, an on-chip temperature sensor and NVRAM look-up tables. A programmable internal feedback resistor provides a wide dynamic range for the APC and power monitoring. Controlled laser safety features and turn-on facilitates hot plugging. The I2C- SMBus-compliant serial interface allows for the communication with the host MCU. The MIC3003 controller works over an extended temperature range.

Clock and Data Recovery 

Microchip offers a family of Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) ICs for high-speed data signal cleaning and retiming in applications such as SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and Infiniband with data rates ranging from 28 Mbps to 2.7 Gbps.
