Atmel Expands Wireless Portfolio with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi SoCs

Atmel is expanding on their leading SmartConnect wireless portfolio with two new 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi turn-key system-on-chips (SoCs), the WILC1000 and WINC1500 SoCs.

The WILC1000 and WINC1500 are SoC solutions optimized for battery-powered IoT applications. These wireless SoCs feature fully integrated power amplifiers, without compromising cost or performance. Both the WILC100 and WINC1500 are add-on solutions which can connect to any Atmel MCU or eMPU targeted for a wide range of IoT consumer and industrial applications.

The WILC1000 and WINC1500 provide multiple peripheral interfaces including UART, SPI and I2C. The only external clock source needed is a high-speed crystal or oscillator with a wide variety of reference clock frequencies supported (between 12 – 50 MHz) and are IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, RF, Baseband, MAC certified.

The WILC1000 is available now as a chip and as a module. The WINC1500 is also available as a chip and a module as well in an evaluation kit featuring Atmel’s SAMD21 MCU.

 

Features and Benefits

 

The WILC1000 is a single chip IEEE®802.11 b/g/n Link Controller SoC. While the WINC1500 is a single chip IEEE802.11 b/g/n RF, IoT Network Controller SoC.

 

The WILC1000 link controller is the ideal Wi-Fi companion to an eMPU thanks to its high speed SPI and SDIO interfaces, or for customers willing to implement their own network stack on the Host MCU/eMPU. It also supports 2, 3, and 4 wire Bluetooth coexistence protocols. The only external clock source needed for the WILC1000 is a high-speed crystal or oscillator with a wide variety of reference clock frequencies supported (between 12 – 50MHz). The WILC1000 is available in both QFN and Wafer Level Chip Scale Package (WLCSP) packaging.

 

The WINC1500 provides internal Flash memory where resides a secure IoT network stack, that can be controlled from any resource constrained MCU thanks to its very small footprint BSD socket API (4KB Flash/1KB RAM). The only external clock source needed for the WINC1500 is a high-speed crystal or oscillator with a wide variety of reference clock frequencies supported (between 12 – 32 MHz). The WINC1500 is available in a QFN package and connects to any Atmel AVR® or Atmel | SMART MCU.

 

The most advanced mode for both the WILC1000 and WINC1500 is a single stream 1×1 802.11n mode providing up to 72Mbps PHY throughput. Both feature a fully integrated power amplifier, LNA, switch and power management modes. Implemented in 65nm CMOS technology, the WILC1000 and WINC1500 offer very low power consumption while simultaneously providing high performance with an optimized bill of material.
